Founded in 1248, Porvoo is Finland’s second-oldest town and has played a significant role in the country’s history. Welcome to Suomenlinna island, one of Finland’s most fascinating landmarks. During our walking tour, you will learn how this fortress has withstood sieges, changed hands between empires, and become a beloved part of Helsinki’s seascape. The tour begins and ends with a scenic waterbus ride from Helsinki Market Square.

During the tour, you will hear fascinating stories about the island’s long history and its Swedish and Russian heritage. At the beginning, we will walk through the merchants’ quarter and past a historic school building before crossing to a neighboring island, where Finland’s naval academy still operates today.
After that, we will see the Church of Alexander Nevsky and visit the Swedish Wall. Along the way, we will also pass through unique residential areas that have been continuously inhabited for centuries. We’ll also see Finland’s first “skyscraper,” the Town Hall building, and make a short stop at the Suomenlinna Visitor Center, where you’ll have a chance to buy local souvenirs.
After our stop at the Visitor Center, we’ll explore the historic shipyard and take in the scenic views from Piperi Park. The tour then continues to Kustaanmiekka, where you’ll see the Swedish Gate—once passed through by a king—along with the summer theatre and Vesikko, Finland’s only surviving submarine.
The walking tour lasts approximately two hours. The ferry ride to the island takes about 20 minutes each way.
